It's a very tough call, after all I love all Sonic Youth's work, but Evol and Sister have the most tracks that are likely to make me squeal with excitment.

EVOL > DDN

i'm not on crack, i only had 10 boxes and sonic youth have done many many albums, some had to be grouped together. |
Daydream Nation.
And why putting Bad Moon and EVOL together??? |

Yeah I see what you mean, though I'm not complaining too much, when I saw the 100% video on MTV I thought WOW! - I was 18 at the time,-otherwise they might have slipped me by. Still, those 3 albums are the ones I listen to least now |

Yeah, it's a word we used in Ireland to describe that decade, applied particularly well to Ireland, having just thrown off the shackles of the Catholic Church we all went a bit mental with the sudden freedom! |
I really do love 'em all, but I just can't shake off the ear-scouring dungeon emanations of NYC G&F (although Mille Feille hasn't really infected me yet). You can tell on NYC Ghosts that they didn't give a fid-uck about exposure!

a thousand leaves/syr era for me. i thought those were some of the best shows i went to. most material was new and jammy/loose. i really liked seeing the instrumental versions before atl came out. i remember having the feeling that they had gotten really "mature". that's a loaded word, but that's how i felt. thurston even cut his hair short.

1) Bad Moon Rising / EVOL
2) Sonic Youth / Confusion Is Sex 3) A Thousand Leaves / NYC Ghosts & Flowers 4) Daydream Nation 5) Sister 6) Murray Street / Sonic Nurse 7) Goo / Dirty 8) Washing Machine 9) Experimental Jet Set Trash and No Star 10) Rather Ripped |
It would make more sense to lump Evol and Sister together than Bad Moon Rising and Evol. Evol was the departure point into the pop world. Bad Moon, while arguably "mellower" in some ways than Confusion Is Sex, is still very much closer to that than to Evol. When they toured for Bad Moon, they just played the whole set straight through, mostly in the same order as the album, and didn't say a word between songs. Evol they introduced each song individually.
I voted for Bad Moon, as that's when I first came on board, and had my life permanently altered. |
I voted Daydream Nation (because its my favourite album ever). I think of the 80's as a whole as one sonic youth era...i dont know why.
The Holy Trinity thing I disagree slightly with, because I just cant, try as I may (and I do love 'Beauty Lies In The Eye' and SZ) get into Sister...for me the best 3 Sonic Youth albums are Daydream Nation, Bad Moon Rising and EVOL....So the 80's are my favourite SY decade Someone mentioned it earilier but 'Daydream Nation' evokes such an emotional response, its one of those albums that reminds me of all the good times in life. Nostalgia can have a huge impact on the way we view music. Its one of the reasons I still hold dear those early System of a Down records (dispite their mighty uncoolness). Everytime I listen to them I remember being 14 hanging out with my friends, getting drunk for the first time and ranting for hours about how screwed up everything is (classic Linklater stuff...you know the score). Daydream Nation is such an anthamic, joyous album it immediately brings back those memories thats why I love it.....anyways im perhaps more nostagic than an 18 year old should be! |
I have to pick the Murray Street/ Sonic Nurse era..... They get better every time they record, and Rather Ripped is amazing, but I thoroughly love Murray Street........and Sonic Nurse.......and Rather Ripped.......
Man!.......I wish I could pick more than one time period. |
I don't think it's fair you grouped EVOL and BMR together. Polar opposites, really! I wouldn't be able to pick, anyway... just sayin'.

Yeah but they both have more in common with each other than anything released after say Sister. |
