Ohhhh, Lee is my favorite. He doesn't have enough songs.

acousticrock87 07.09.2006 10:59 PM

I'm reading his Jrnls80s thing. It's pretty badass. I really want to get East Jesus now. They have several of his CDs at the record store down here.

We do now at work, thanks to my bitching and moaning.

Paper Cup Exit was my favorite off Sonic Nurse. I don't know if I always prefer his stuff, but it's usually a strong point of the album. I got the impression that the upcoming solo record is going to be more rock/songwriter based, but I could be wrong.

Lee's songs are always my favorites. I saw hiw playing Drift in Brussels in april and it was my favorite show ever. Karen Koltrane and Hoarfrost are two of my three favorite sonic youth's songs.

Hah, yeah. I've played Miniature Golf in New Brighton. And had fish and chips. Very english.

Lee is great. The first time i ever heard Lee's voice was when i bought A Thousand Leaves in 98, and it was Hoarfrost. I didn't know SY at the time but i was an R.E.M. fan and at first listen, i thought the singer was Michael Stipe ! Sometimes Lee sounds like him, at least in this song. I had to check the liner notes to see it was a guy named Lee Ranaldo, silly me ;)

sonic sphere 07.11.2006 12:14 PM

lee's songs are my favourite too

I just picked that up a few days ago, not knowing what it was. I was shuffling through a stack of 7"s at Rhino and saw it. There's no title, it just says Sonic Youth. Obviously I couldn't go wrong. I still need a frickin' record player...

I really like Jrnls80s. Some of it's hard to get my head around, but it's better than I expected. His entries are pretty emotional, but very abstract. It starts a little before Sonic Youth started, but he didn't write much until around '85.

trainyard bliss 07.11.2006 02:08 PM

on most days, i would say lee is my favorite, but part of it is because his output is limited in comparison to thurston's and kim's. i have east jesus--i love it. what's this jrnls80s thing and how do i access it?

acousticrock87 07.11.2006 02:14 PM

It's a published book of his journal entries/letters/poems/thoughts from 1980-1989.

kingcoffee 07.11.2006 09:13 PM

I'm really surprised that a lot of you thought that Lee and Thurston were the same person when you head their singing. I immediatley heard the differemce in singing. And although when I fisrt started listening to them I didn't know the names of the band members, I knew the difference between Lee's and Thurston's vocals.

kingcoffee 07.11.2006 09:13 PM

Also, Lee's songs are better than Thuston's and Kim's, although I love and value all members of the band.

touch me i'm sick 07.11.2006 09:54 PM

i feel like the instrumentals sound so much better underneath lee's spoken stories

But I bet if Lee did as many songs as Thurston, and vice versa, that Thurstons songs would probably seem better. Thurston can't consistently put out great stuff at the rate he does. But Lee doesn't sing much, so he can.
