and i reckon it's far more likely to be the case that they would title the song ry cooder out of respect rather than scorn.

well, one would assume that to be the case if they have never listened to the "song" because the "song" is just some recording of basically nothing, so it's not "far more likely"...not at all.

It's certainly no homage to Ry Cooder considering his work.

It's no John Cage. It no John & Yoko "Two Minutes Silence" even. It's no "John & Yoko" (the song) which is like 20 minutes of them saying each other's names back & forth in every inflection (which gets really tripped out after awhile too).

Allow me focus my discussion on their "song", "Ry Cooder" from their debut album. Ry Cooder played with The Magic Band. He is perhaps best known for his work on the Crossroads & Paris, Texas soundtracks. Tortoise, since their music is airy, would love to be on movie soundtracks like Ry Cooder, but they know that they never will & blame it on society. Maybe one day they'll record themselves taking a shit while someone meanders on a piano & call it "Nicky Hopkins."

what the hell does it even matter. talent does NOT (told you i would say it again) warrant any goodness, at least in any given persons opinion. i do know who Ry Cooder is, and i really don't care all that much. i don't like much blues and i really hate the sound of a slide gtr. what are you bitching about so much, quit jumping to such inane conclusions and enjoy whatever music you wanna. if you don't like tortoise, whatever, what does it matter.
