Quite a few of those things listed apply to my school too.
We have no 24h access to the facilities. we can't stay after 8pm.
No proper hang out places.
Apparently the student exhibitions have been banned by the administration for being too "offensive".
It's all digital, there's no traditional printing etc in the education plan.
The scheduling of the courses is weird and illogical.
I think I've talked twice to the graphic design tutor student, and our tutor teacher is a foolish lady, incapable of giving proper critique and feedback, and she seems to know surprisingly little about the stuff we're supposed to learn.
Printing is expensive and there's only one proper laser printer that miraculously can fuck up yr work with no apparent reason. Still the school recently acquired 25+ macpro workstations, but didn't do shit to the printer issue.
The coffee is pricey.

+other minor things.

the next year we get to do work with local companies and businesses, which is something my hope lies in... that way you actually might get some of the realities of the industry bashed into your head.

ultimately the most vexatious thing is the fact that I lack talent.

dionysusundone 05.14.2007 11:48 PM

Bookstore and in college.

pbradley 05.14.2007 11:59 PM

third year college student majoring in philosophy

so my actual future job will have nothing to do with this

I'm a supervisor for the Consumer Protection Division of the WA State Attorney General's Office in Vancouver, WA, which is right across the Columbia from Portland. I got this position just last month, before that I worked for the Dept. of Labor and Industries, and before that I worked for this office as the office assistant.

Before I got in with the state I worked for several years in Olympia as a commercial dj, playing '80s hits. I still do that once or twice a year for cash, every NYE, and the (very) occasional wedding.

Right now though, my company's next contract with the State does not start again until July, so I am getting to work from home. Pretending to do something, but not really having to do much of anything. Getting paid a hell of a lot to play at the park with my kids, go on walks, and layout by our pool. I'm loving every minute of it.

that's sweet as a nut

Ha, I work at Borders. Which makes you competition.

ZEROpumpkins 05.15.2007 03:56 AM

Cool, Borders is a good place just to chill out and read the AMG guide to rock!

sonicl 05.15.2007 04:05 AM

I do all the clerical shit that has to be done so that people will get pensions. Or at least I try to. If someone in our IT department would shift his or her arse for a couple of seconds and reboot the server on which the software I use is stored, I might be able to actually do my job. But hey, I only asked yesterday morning, I really shouldn't be so impatient, should I?

If anyone here works in an IT department, can I just ask, is there actually some sort of a training course where people who do your job learn to be utterly useless and unhelpful?

Tell me about it. I rang them LAST WEEK to ask them to do something about the tricky telephone system and i'm still waiting for them to get here. They rarely answer the phone and when they do, they sound like they don't care much or know what to do. I do wonder what these lovely, but ultimately lazy fuckers do apart from having cigarette breaks all the time.

fishmonkey 05.15.2007 04:15 AM

Going on the Dole in Ireland is a viable career option though, you should stick with it. You get twice as much as you do over here and you don't even have to go to the Jobcentre every fortnight do you?

I hope you get the job, Fishy. It might make up for the huge disappointment you're going to be feeling come Saturday evening.

walmart 3rd shift employee right now.. stocking, yay! $9.50 an hour, been there almost 2 years, decent? living at home, saving my money, have about $5000 saved, want to become a stenographer or a secretary eventually...

screamingskull 05.17.2007 10:14 AM

okay so i've been slaking at work for a while now, but it never mattered because we were so quiet and i worked with the assistant manager and he was kool about it, he did the same. We did the job, just not with enthusiasm.

But now the manager has called me and asked me to come in tomorrow because he needs to talk with me!

Scared now!

sonicl 05.17.2007 10:25 AM

For all you know he may be about to hand you a pay rise, or even a promotion.

screamingskull 05.17.2007 10:28 AM

yeah, i doubt it, you don't really get them at the crap hole i work in. The thing is i haven't done anything wrong. I've just been unenthusiastic about it all. But he has never called me in before, and he sounded all serious.

If the worst happens and i get fired, even thats not the worst thing, i suppose everyone gets fired at one time or another.

sonicl 05.21.2007 04:07 AM

screamingskull 05.21.2007 07:35 AM

The list goes on, I don't remember any of this???, if i was that badly behaved i would remember it!!! I didn't get fired or even a warning though.
