Putting emphasis on your 'quirkiness' makes you more ordinary than everyone, if not desperate for attention. You'd think that walls would be grabbing you by the shoulder and have a word, but hey, obviously they need to start talking louder.

edit: I'm reading your post now. And it's a general observation, anyway.

I think it's about meeting the right people. I've met a couple people over the last few years who I don't feel awkward with at all and they've been people I really clicked with from the beginning.
Lately though my general awkwardness has faded a lot to my reveal my hidden grumpiness.
Just grow and keep pushing the limits of your confidence is my advice.
