live songs
This has been discussed in fragments around the bored and is not really contained in one single thread; I was wondering how SY chooses which songs they're going to play live. I mean, would they ever bust out something completely random, like Orange Rolls, Angel's Spit again? Or even anything else off Washing Machine? gah, I have too much time to think!
|
i think before each tour everybody makes a list of which songs they'd like to do (or maybe the singers pick the list based on tunes they wanna sing, i received a potential list arranged that way before the murray st tour). from there, other members may veto certain songs (i know a few that have been talked about for years now, that certain members just don't want to or can't relearn). it certainly seems like they've settled into a pretty standard set of oldies since 2000 or so, but they definitely pull out some surprises for each tour. keep in mind they now have to teach a new member old songs as well.
what i find fun is the songs they choose for kim to 'dance' to (ie: not play an instrument, just sing + shake a tambourine, or whatever). kool thing, then drunken butterfly, then kissability, then PCH (and now most of rather ripped!). if you'd asked me in 2000 what i thought the likelihood of ever hearing 'kissability' or 'PCH' (or shaking hell or skip tracer or whatever) again, i would have been pretty skeptical...but shit happens! who knows, 'orange rolls' may be the next kim dancer. |
thanks, Chris! I don't want to be too nosy, but have the sprawl/cross the breeze/the wonder/other washing machine songs been thrown around in their lists?

thanks-i think i was unclear. I meant has the idea of resurrecting them been thrown around. |
in the last couple years some songs have popped up either in sets or sound checks
Total Trash, Death Valley '69 (soundcheck) unfortunately there is a bunch that aren't ever gonna return, Cinderella's Big Score most glaringly as two band member don't like their parts on the songs, same with the Jet Set |

i really can't understand why they never play The Sprawl and Cross The Breeze.. two of my favourite songs, and they surely must rock shit live.
|
they played skip tracer in paris last year!
|
this is insane: last night I had a dream that I spoke to Thurston after a show and told him that he needs to relearn the sprawl and 'cross the breeze. I never thought this forum would be so significant while sleeping!
for the record, he said he'd try... i think. |
One of the highlights of the Pretty Fuc*in' Dirty tour was "Theresa's Sound World". Talk about blowing your skull apart. That one with the lighting effects was one of my best live SY moments.
|
theresa has been discussed for years, i think, but somebody won't do it, much to my sadness. same w/ 'stereo sanctity'. last year they were trying to figure out which 'lee' song they could start doing, i got the impression somebody didnt wanna do 'joni', which is a big fuckin' shame. thurston mentioned 'saucer-like' as being one they should relearn in an interview around nurse, i think, but so far that hasn't happened. he also mentioned being unable to remember his part on 'the sprawl' in an interview, and i know that was talked about being played. they talked about doing 'diamond sea' on the ummm murray street or nurse tour, but so far have not... (i think this would be cool now, like the 'expressway' closers w/ a solid 15 minutes of noise...for a while i thought diamond sea would die forever in 1996 but i think it could return).
ummm...i heard murmurs about 'the wonder'...and some others...but this was a while back, and i hate to keep getting my own hopes up, let alone yours! but hey...everyone loves 100%, right! .. right? |
Lee song...
leesong keep doin' Skip Tracer and Mote keep Rats around And resuscitate Karen Koltrane Rain King will always be the dream though... |
I just found this thread again, haha. Looks like we've gotten sprawl/breeze/rain king/joni. Cool!
|
weird!
i'll throw a few more out that i remember being talked about.. 'tunic' 'purr' 'i dont wanna walk around with you' in '02, 'ghost bitch' 'tuff gnarl' 'confusion is sex' 'the good and the bad' in '06... |
I miss some of these old threads...
And I prefer live SY to anything else. |

That's awesome! I wonder if we will actually get any of those. |
A half-hearted attempt was made to influence the setlist for the Bolzano show earlier this year by kidnapping a member of the band and making a ransom demand of "we choose what the band plays". However, the attempt was foiled by the band member concerned (an elderly grey-haired gentleman) who claimed that that the band could not remember how to play the songs that were demanded, upon which point he was released by his captors.
For pictorial evidence of this audacious crime, see grete's signature: ![]() It might look friendly, but that's a vice-like grip she has on his shoulder. |

i'm only breaking silence now cuz i'm pretty sure none of those will ever get played :D though they have surprised me before.. i think 'ghost bitch' was just an idea cuz lee was using the acoustic again for 'or', and same w/ 'good and the bad' cuz thurston was back on bass for 'rats'. i do know they soundchecked 'confusion is next' and 'world looks red' but as we know, only 'world' made it to the public ear... :( |
also, i suspect relearning all of daydream lessened the chances of them relearning more 'old' tunes for a while...

Or it might not.. Maybe they'll realize how easy it was relearning these songs, and how much fun they had playing them? As for what songs they play live, I know the Steve and Thurston make the setlists, but maybe that's just from night to night. The whole band probably has a say in what songs they'll bring with them on tour. I also read that Theresa's Soundworld is one of Steve's fav's, so don't blame him for them not playing it these days. |
Chris is dead wrong, I have personally seen the band light candles and consult the Ouija for the set lists..

Oh, I know who to blame. I was surprised when I saw Steve writing up the set list in "This is Known as a Blues Scale", I never realized that was his handwriting! That was also the first time I discovered that "Orange Rolls" had the working title of "HYPER II" on that tour, so perhaps they thought it sounded like Hyperstation...? (btw, people know most of 'blues scale' has leaked, right?) |

Chris, do you have any idea why they stopped playing pretty much all of Washing Machine & Leaves or is that a mystery? |

thanks ^

Cool, my ratio on onemoresolo is very poor. Thanks again :) |

Why'd they stop playing pretty much all of Confusion Is Sex, Bad Moon Rising, EVOL, Goo, Dirty, Jet Set, Ghosts & Flowers, Murray Street, or Nurse? It's what they do! |
Have you heard the version from Portland on the Nurse tour? It may be best if they let it rest...

Good point! |
you can hear the song here:
flac: http://www.sendspace.com/file/eb0x47 mp3: http://www.sendspace.com/file/zgfqub i'm going to upload the whole show (audio) to ingrams site, i also have the video for this but it's 6.5GB so it'd take ages to upload |

its cuz the Ouija said so... ![]() It said, "progress forward as musicians, play new material, forget the back catalogue.." |

Thanks stu! Can't wait to hear the full gig. |
They have to play the most recen tracks off of their latest album s they can sell copies of it. That is just an industry thing to do...
And yes even the Youth do that.. |
like any band who writes music because they love it, they are eager to share their new compositions with the world night after night. they enjoy it, it's fresh, it's fun. they don't generally have an hour and a half of new material, so they throw some old songs that they still have fun playing, or are crowd pleasers, or whatever...
re: karenology portland '04, i think they do an amazing segue into it from pattern recognition and then thurston, i guess, forgets how to play karen's intro, it's actually kind of hilarious---steve tries to compensate and lee just seems amused/confused... i forget if they pull it together or not. they burn into new hampshire afterwards, which is sick... uuuh shaking hell i guess cuz thurston was on bass for 'rats' and they didn't want to torture us w/ my friend goo |
Quote:
this is the most i've posted in a long time (maybe four posts today haha). have you recieved any 'almost played' lists lately, chris? |
nah, nobody tells me anything anymore. as always, i heard murmurs of failed attempts at 'theresa' and thurston mentioned that they were giving 'dirty boots' a shot in some interview...
like i just mentioned in another thread, i think that the time spent relearning the daydream songs is time they would've spent relearning a random group of older tunes (if they even had any interest -- certainly not 14 of em!!). 'stereo sanctity' seems to be the oddity of the post-Daydream revival. and i guess 'death valley', although it still feels like just yesterday that they were burning that one nightly on the 'leaves' tour... |
