Not another DJ thread at least.

DJ? Don't talk to me about DJs. Things haven't been the same since Tony Blackburn got sacked from Radio 1 for having an intimate and rather inappropriate relationship with Arnold.

I still chuckle when I think about how hot under he collar some Radio 1 DJs got over The Smiths' Panic (Bruno Brookes springs to mind).

sonicl 06.15.2007 07:46 AM

Didn't Dave Lee Travis get all arsey over something very trivial and quit? I'm going to have to check on Wikipedia, I won't be able to sleep tonight otherwise.

sonicl 06.15.2007 07:52 AM

On 8 August 1993 DLT resigned on-air during his Sunday morning show, stating that he could not agree with changes that were being made to Radio 1. Dave told his audience that changes were afoot that he could not tolerate - "....and I really want to put the record straight at this point and I thought you ought to know - changes are being made here which go against my principles and I just cannot agree with them...".

I recall that one of the changes was the intoduction of DJs who had never seen Hermans Hermits play live.

1 (4 pound) wild duck, whole
4 cups duck blood
8 cups water
1 teaspoon salt
1 stalk celery, cut into 2 inch pieces
1 sprig chopped fresh parsley
1 cup heavy cream
5 whole allspice berries
2 whole cloves
16 ounces pitted prunes
1/2 cup raisins
1 tart apple - peeled, cored and chopped
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon white sugar
salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1. Cover whole duck with water in large stock pot. Add salt, and bring to a boil. Skim off foam.
2. Place celery, parsley, allspice, and cloves in a cheese cloth bag, and add to stock pot. Cover and cook over low heat until meat is tender, approximately 1 1/2 hours.
3. Remove cheese cloth bag from stock pot. Remove duck. Discard bones, cut up meat, and return to the broth.
4. Mix in prunes, raisins and apple. Simmer for 30 minutes.
5. In a medium bowl, beat flour and sugar into cream until smooth. Beat in duck blood gradually. Add 1/2 cup hot soup stock to blood mixture, blending thoroughly. Pour mixture slowly back into stock pot, stirring constantly until soup comes to a boil. Season to taste with salt, pepper, lemon juice and vinegar.

2 questions on syllabus about the puritans (page 39-48 on reader aka american perspectives)
Be certain to answer question, include how, and, why?
One paragraph per question
(about 200 words)
DOUBLE SPACED
Put name and Title of the article
Trouble? Categorize
Try and keep these in historical past-tense; "The Puritans DID. Puritans FOCUSED. Puritans STRIVED TO"
Conservatism is a philosophby that came about in western europe in the 1400s
Why?
For the same reason that the europeans sailed across the ocean
Same reason that they wanted those new products from the far east
For the same reason they thought that they could live a better life with those assets in their life.
This all happened in the early 1400's
Portugal was a Principality
Spain was broken into different Prinicipalities
They decided to unite to get rid of the Muslims who attacked Spain and took over a bit of land
The english called the moors/morocons "Barbers"
Moors took over south of spain
Spaniards united to drive the moors out and then started fighting amongst themselves
Ferdinand and Isabella united in marriage to unite Spain and get rid of Muslim influence.
They told the Jews and Muslims that if they didnt convert to their religion, they would kill them
Kings and Church were changing christianity for their own personal wealth

Politics corrupted the church
Protestans "GO BY THE BOOK"

Jamestown was a corporate entitity
Dutch told the people in jamestown to grow tobacco
As the late 1500s progressed more european pirates began more seriously to raid spanish galias
Spain was also having difficulties with some of the natives too.
Spanish resort to what the portugese had established, plantation growing.
Dutch followed.
Portugese brought african slaves to establish sugar cane plantations in what is now Brazil.
They got the idea from the sugar cane plantations in South Asia
While Spain in late 1500s is growing weaker, other european countries are growing stronger
Other European people are uniting like Spain did to form National States
Many still exist til today
Spains power in europe continued to grow, except in the new world
England did it differently than the French and Spanish
They tried to steal the resources (gold, emeralds, silver, etc.)
Did not work so they established settlements in the chesapeke
Later on they came to Massachussets
There was small settlements of family
Households
Each doing their own thing
Often working together to protect each other
A small town
They came for religious and economic reasons
As the colony developed, their kids didnt have as much oppurtinity so they moved on to other small towns
and on and on
The south had agriculture plantations, with slave workers (europeans who were promissed 50 acres of land), didnt work so they resorted to african slaves. It was cheaper.
In 1640, new king, Charles the First, Gets england involved in war.
Parliment takes over by cutting off charles head, get rid of church of england by cutting head off
They create the common wealth of England (new gov)
Lord protector Oliver Crowell
Hes selected by the guys in parliment
He works for the common well being of everybody
The government came from the people not the king
After 10 years of this, people aren't too pleased with puritanical rule
They want to setup a government that was different
Crowell wanted to shove religion down everyones throats
They then did the Resteroation of monarchy, but limited
Monarchy keeps getting limited over time (currently, the queen has no power, no authority)
Parliment wants to get back at making money on the colonies.
They set a couple of acts, called the Navigational Acts
Any commoditties leaving the colonies had to be on an english licensed ship
And it had to go to english ports.
Made it to where no one could make anything that can go for sale
If you wanted a hat you either made it or bought it from an english merchant
In order to make this work, Charles the 2nd and parliment set new colonies
They take over New York from the Dutch
Included all of what is now New York and New Jersey
Charles the 2nd establishes north and south carolina and pennsylvania
The Carolinas become cash crop/slave labor lands
WIlliam Penns colony is a bit different,
QUAKERS
When charles dies, james the 2nd, his brother, becomes king
He had very close ties with the Roman Catholic church in ROME
The church worked to get him as king to get Roman influence in england
Parliment tries to get him out, they force him to advocate
He wanted a 5th of everything
Mary, Charles daughter, becomes Queen
John Locke was a scottish natural philosopher
He studied nature
Beginning in 1630s and 1640s, scholars from the edingburgh,
He found out that the truth about life is not in GENESIS
He found that in the beginning of life, we were FREE
Perfect Liberty
John locke and David Hughes say that this is the social contract, individuals agree to unite as one to create a government(or state) to make their lifes more safe, their liberties more safe, and their property more safe
THen they choose people of that government who will make rules about life, property, and what not, then they tell people what the rules are
THen they select people to enfore those rules onto others
Everybody has a constitution
Its how you organize your life, how you enpower your living, and how you limit yourself
When James the 2nd was removed it was called the Glorious Revolution because they didnt have to cut off his head
