Oh my god, I get Rather Ripped now
I'm in this really wierd mood today, and Rather Ripped just seems so coherent to me today, much more than before. Especially the song "Do You Believe in Rapture?"
the more i listen, the more i like
I haven't really got into Do you Believe In Rapture that much as much as I have with what a waste and Reena. I'm going to wait until I buy it till I listen to it excessively
I love Jams Run Free.
Am I the only one who likes sleepin' around?

and the lyrics to Sleepin' Around aren't? |
"Lyrics are an afterthought"

I liked the early version of Sleepin' Around that was in one of the slide show videos with no vocals. My favorite part was at the end when it started over and then faded out. I was really bummed that they didn't do that on the album version.
this album is just wonderful, I really really like it. I'm going thru it all again today, as I write now. RATS is playing now. I'm gonna buy it as soon as it comes out.
SLEEPIN AROUND is a beautiful song. My faves are INCINERATE and PINK STEAM... but the whole thing is just too cool. I hope they'll make it to Italy this time around, I wanna see these songs live. |
experimental? nope. trash? yes. jet set? i wish. no star? well, i give it one star for the bass line in rats. shite.
I enjoy the music... the melodic interplay between the guitars throughout makes it feel very summer-y to me. It's a bit hit and miss lyrically in my opinion, however I think Kim really excels herself vocally. Pink Steam followed by Or is one hell of an end to an album and sums it up perfectly.
It was kind of inevitable that it wouldn't be too everyones taste. |
Best SY album since Washing Machine.
I love The Neutral, how the drums just skate across with the dreamy guitar. I think Jim leaving was infact a good thing. Loved Jim's work in Gastr Del Sol and his solos, but this album explains alot of things. |
I notice a lot of people on the board don't like change. who wants to listen to the same record all the time? Fuck that, I like new shit, I like the new cd.
Starting with murray st they slowing become more 'structured' and less improvish.
From Murray Street to Nurse and now RR. This album is the last of their 70s classic rock influenced trilogy and they really kick out the songs here. It's song heaven, and just in time for Eurovision too. They should have joined.
If you ask me, I'd say NYC G + F is weeker than the new trio albums.
It's better than most albums released today, but it does deviate a lot from the older sonic youth sound. It's a little more mellow, more mainstreamish, but I still enjoy listening to it. Pink Steam is probably my favorite track.
The 3 albums have their strengths. They're no Daydream Nation or EVOl or Sister, of course; but they have a certain charm that grooves into your head if you can bend them around your mind. Thurston asked fans to imagine Fleetwood Mac jamming with Black Flag, when they listen to Sonic Nurse; and that's what I do, actually. :) IMHO, Murray Street is the mellowest of these 3, and it progressively gets rockier, culminating in Reena and Incinerate, which are barely recognizable as 'conventional' (I know) Sonic Youth; they sound more like Television, actually. Not that that's a bad thing, of course...But it's different from 'normal' (I know) Sonic Youth, so you have the preconceptions to get rid of, i think, to actually appreciate what the youf have done for these 3 albums. Just my two cents worth. Thanks for reading.
I think that it's interesting to hear these sides of the band. They still have SYR for the experimental sides. I have to say that Sonic Nurse is one of my least favorite SY albums, but it's good to have. I don't mind their style change at all.
what a waste has the worst lyrics on the whole album. i like reena and jams run free
Assblaster is completely correct. SY does one good song and then lets the rest of the album just suck lately. Except for MS. MS was damn good.
I am not even looking forward to Rather Ripped. |
Yeah. Remember, my post count is huge so I am always correct.
Disregard that rule for Marley. |
hayden is sy even one of your favorite bands? it seems like you dislike them more than like them.
and no you shouldn't look forward to RR because it's their worst. |
And always baked.

CIS/KYI is easily one of my top 10 favorite records of all time. They just don't put out that much great material. There are some songs that I think "Oh my God. Sonic Youth is genius." and there are others that I think "Horse shit! Why am I listening to this HORSE SHIT?" |
that's how i feel. i don't even like any of the crap they have put out since Goo. i don't even know why still listen to them. I think it's just out of habbit.
I dig stuff after Goo. I like about 3 or 4 SY albums. CIS/KYI, Murray Street, and Sister are 3 of my all-time favorite albums. Some others I like quite a bit but there are certainly albums in which I feel sorry for SY for releasing them.

Washing Machine is fantastic. I'm not too keen on 1000 Leaves or NYCG+F but they are much better than EJSTNS, Goo, or Nurse ever will be. |

I think he was talking to Laila. |
CIS, DDN, evol, BMR are my favorites. I can't bring myself to liking dirty b/c Youth against fascism is just sad.
And theresa's sound world is radiant...
......Chapel Hill.....the whole fucking album.
But ppl might be turned off by the whole Butch Vig/grunge connection thing... Their loss, i guess...
I never understood all that crap. Dirty IS Sonic Youth.....it's not like they did a record for Simon Cowell or something. Blah, whatever.
I guess the whole grunge movement was misunderstood and misaligned; if there was ever such a thing as grunge at all; outside of Seattle that is... :(
I don't especially like Dirty. Not for a specific reason, I just don't. It was the first one I bought, listened to it a couple times, and then put it away for a while. Eventually I went out and bought Experimental Jet for no good reason and really got into it, and now that I look back on Dirty it really is good, but first impressions are hard to shake.
best sy record since a thousand leaves
I can't believe so many of you guys don't like Murray Street and Sonic Nurse. I love em. I still like them better than Rather Ripped, but Rather Ripped has its own place to me now.

could be cuz you're just fascist scum yourself, deep inside? DIRTY rules. so does RATHER RIPPED. long live SONIC YOUTH. you "fans" are bitches. |
I sort of agree with Laila about Youth Against Fascism. But I don't really like songs that are so blatantly political, they just don't seem clever to me. I find it hard to like political songs by bands other than Gang of Four or Fugazi because they pretty much perfected the art of the political song.
I like Dirty though- 100%, Swimsuit Issue, Drunken Butterfly, Theresa's Sound World, Wish Fulfillment, Sugar Kane, Orange Rolls Angel's Spit, Purr, JC, Creme Brulee. My favorite SY albums would have to be Confusion is Sex, Daydream Nation, Goo and Murray Street. Mainly because those ones seem the most coherent and the least hodgepodgey, like a lot of SY albums do. I don't see everone's fascination with Washing Machine, I'd rank it in one of my least favorites. |
