Three Lobed Recordings - 10th Anniversary
from their newsletter.....
"2010 marks our little label's 10th anniversary. It is kinda crazy to think that this little "hobby" has turned into the label as it is today. In celebration we are assembling a celebratory 4 LP box set titled "Not The Spaces You Know, But Between Them." It will feature exclusive side-long tracks from the following artists (in alphabetical order) - Bardo Pond, Comets On Fire, Eternal Tapestry, Steve Gunn, Mouthus, Sonic Youth and Sun City Girls. The one side that is not being taken up in full by one of the artists listed above is being split by new material from Wooden Wand and D. Charles Speer & the Helix. This is going go be a lavish box featuring new artwork throughout by one of our faves, old friend Casey Burns (http:// tinyurl.com/ykk55cb). Look for this one to come out in winter 2010-2011. There are a lot of additional details to sort out on this one. Keep yr eyes on this space. We have been sorting through the material we have received from this one and expect the gears to fully turning on this one over the course of May and June." This label is always putting out excellent stuff....im excited for this one. |
sweeeet!
|
i haven't chimed in on an update on this one in a while so here goes - we're still working on it! ha - this is easily the biggest undertaking ever for the label and our artist, casey burns, is working on the artwork at the present. we can't do too much more in regards to the audio until we have it all in hand - we have most all of the box set music in hand (a full 3 of the 4 records - are waiting on two sides of stuff) as well as stuff for some bonuses that will go along with this one. the current target for this one is the first month or two of 2011. it's going to be great - so pumped.

this is news.
Can't wait! |
Its gonna rule...

Sun City Girls?!!!!!!!!!
...whoa. |

yes sir! this is one of the two final sides that i'm waiting on. this one is totally coming together nicely and all of the contributions that i have so far are very, very intense and top notch stuff. no filler here. |
Man! Any idea when the SCG side was recorded? They'd supposedly wrapped up a "final album" last year but haven't released it yet. Or are they recording new material, just as Alan and Richard? Any news would be appreciated, I'll make sure and spread the word. So excited.

since i haven't heard it yet, i can't be 100% sure but i feel confident that it is archival (and not new) material. i know that alan and rick have a TON of SCG archival stuff that will permit many more SCG releases if they're so inclined. i too am anxiously awaiting that "final" studio album that they have been working on for a while. it will be glorious. |
thank you, posting this info to some of my fellow scg fan friends :) Can't wait.
|
in response to the questions before about the SCG material, the SCG side to the three lobed 4x LP 10th ann box due out early next year will consist of three well recorded tracks taken from the band's final US show on 11/12/04 in austin. it rules.
we are finally about to have all of the stuff in place on the box to start taking pre-orders and whatnot (to help us get this ridiculous project off of the ground). look for more info on that front before too long - it's a great set as everyone involved has brought their "a" game. there will be some extra options bringing some extra fun to the table as well. ha. |
As soon as I get mine I'm going to mainline a pound of heroin right through my eyeball! I can't wait! This is going to be the best day of my life.

Steve twitted:
Pomona,CA sound check recording of ss + kg transforming nicely into something else (for 3-lobed ?) anyway, SY track list is: 1. In & Out (7:36) (Kim vocal) 2. Out & In (12:19) (instrumental) |
from 3 lobed twitter!!!:
seriously-the jams from @thesonicyouth for our 4xLP set are THE REAL DEAL. just spun 'em again & cannot wait until folks can check 'em out. |
1. In & Out (7:36) (Kim vocal)
2. Out & In (12:19) (instrumental) :) :) :) |

Is the Comets on Fire contribution a new recording or one taken from the shelves?
It's been a long time, I was wondering about their current status. |
Quote:
the comets recording is similar to their "black cassette" collage work (if you are not familiar with it, check here - http://silvercurrant.blogspot.com/20...-cassette.html ). it is a collage of rehearsal recordings from between 2006-2010. |
I'm not familiar with that one, thanks for the link.
Good to know they're still jamming. |
From elsewhere:
A little over a year ago we first made mention of a big vinyl box set project called "Not The Space You Know, But Between Them" that we were working on as a sort of celebration of Three Lobed Recording's tenth anniversary. We spent the better part of 2010 wrapping up details on this project and we are stoked to say that in late December we delivered the entirety of the audio to our preferred mastering engineer (and we understand that this audio is getting ready to be popped into the hopper for mastering shortly). The gears are now starting to fully turn on this project and we currently hope to have it out into the world sometime around mid-year. This 4xLP box is going to be pretty intense - a nice and heavy Stoughton lid box, printed inner sleeves, a big foldover 12"x24" insert with liner notes from Marc Masters (The Wire, Pitchfork), new original artwork on the box and everything else by long-time friend/fave Casey Burns (www.caseyburns.com). Needless to say, it's far and away the singular most daunting financial undertaking we have ever taken on - that explains the delay between now and when the box will be out. In case you have forgotten, this monster collection features exclusive sides of material from the following artists (in alphabetical order) - Bardo Pond, Comets On Fire, Eternal Tapestry, Steve Gunn, Mouthus, Sonic Youth and Sun City Girls. The one side that is not being taken up in full by one of the artists listed above is being split by new material from Wooden Wand and D. Charles Speer & the Helix. Our mind is blown at just how epic this collection is - everyone participating has brought their "A" game and this set really displays a great snapshot of many of the disparate sides of the underground that we hope Three Lobed has helped to showcase over the last decade. We are just about ready to put out a lot more information on this set, pre-ordering mechanisms (copies purchased mail order from Three Lobed will have the opportunity to add a mail-order only 7" with new tracks from Hush Arbors and Key Demo as well as a new CD from a mystery artist with Three Lobed ties) and the like. We are working hard to keep this one as affordable as possible - as we really want all interested folks to be able to check it out. We will be simultaneously offering this set for pre-sale on this page as well as through a Kickstarter page with a modest goal and hope to do so within no more than the next two weeks (depending on our work schedule). Look for these details soon. |
Thanks Mr B...

so excited

Jeepers! This scared me! ! ! I was all like "What?!?" This must be some super-dee-duper-special box set! And here I was thinking they were trying to keep it affordable! Laugh out loud. I mean, really, there are some crazily-priced goodies out there these days. And -- I was getting pretty pumped about the descriptions given thus far! :) :) |
haha no! read the link! if you pledge $850 or more they give you the box set & the 7" & the mystery artist CD + every three lobed release thus far (even the 'out of print' ones) + the next 3 releases after the box set (if I read it right)
I would love love love this |
Oh I did! And yes the $850 level would indeed be grand! Was leaving a bit of mystery for other readers. . . ah darn . . .
|
I feel bad now...

SIDE C - Sonic Youth
1. In & Out. 2. Out & In. "In & Out" recorded in Pomona, CA and at Echo Cañon, NJ, in 2010. "Out & In" recorded and mixed at Echo Cañon, NYC in 2000 in includes Jim O'Rourke. Two epic jams, including the monumental thirteen minute instrumental "Out & In" which touches on elements of every part of Sonic Youth's myriad sounds. |
FYI - once we have hit our funding goal via kickstarter we will be putting this one up for sale through our direct label site as well. once it's up there we will have a pay in two installments option for the box set, fear not. we just waiting to put the stuff up on the label site until this has funding so that we don't have folks paying in multiple ways and then leave the kickstarter stuff unfunded.
|
Quote:
yep, you read it right. it is a copy of everything out on three lobed up to now and the next three records into the future. i worked on that one for a while and nailed down what i think is a pretty fair price for that level (hell, i tried to nail down very fair prices on all of these levels). |
Hey, Corey - what happens if the project doesn't get funded through kickstarter (not that that looks likely)?
|
I'm also curious if you anticipate the TLR site pre-order will cost the same for the basic boxset ($65)? Just for those of us who are totally broke and need the cheapest option (or are waiting for tax returns...)
|
Quote:
we have an option or two in mind but we'll cross that bridge when and if we get there - hopefully it won't be necessary. |
Quote:
the pricing direct through the label on the box (or the box + 7"/CD) will be the same as on kickstarter - no difference to that end. |
for folks who weren't interested in picking the set up via kickstarter, we now have the set up for pre-order directly through us at the label site. link here - http://threelobed.com/tlr/tlr080.html
|
Sorted :)
|
just ordered! can't wait.
