Never lend things to people

I lent my $600+ camera to someone, got it back, and it didn't work. Took it in, they told me how to fix it (download some thing from a website and whatever), and that didn't work. Took it in again to have them look at it. Cost to fix is about $300-$350 and it'll take 4-6 weeks. She said she'd pay for it (after she knew it was fucked, before she knew the price) but still. I was looking forward to taking pictures of Autumn all year with that camera, and now I can't. I'm rather pissed.

Don't lend things to people and don't borrow things. If anything, borrow but not too much. But never lend. My mumma taught me that when I was little.

Back in elementary school, my class used to go to the school library once a week. I'd never been to a library before so I didn't understand how they worked. I still have two books on polar bears somewhere in my garage because I never actually checked them out from the library, so I never got a notice asking me to return them.

The moral of the story being that I don't return borrowed items unless I am specifically asked to return them. And also that when I was younger I only liked to read books about animals.

I would want it back, I will charge if it is stained.

I lent my Devil and Daniel Johnston video to a friend months ago but haven't gotten it back.

I'm only a partial fan of Johnston so I'm not really stressin it.

Wow, that's the very first post of yours I've read that makes sense and isn't offensive!

neither a lender nor a borrower be.

never lend people records, thats just a given because they never give them back and they dont love them as much as you do and scratch them etc. i used to have a pile of records i was willing to lend but only to people i trusted very well and who i knew the address of but that has now stopped due to untold damage.

Yeah, I don't lend music any more, I worry too much about never seeing it again. But the ability to rip a copy and then send it by yousendit or whatever makes that unnecessary these days anyway.

I borrow garden and DIY tools from a friend sometimes. Actually that's just reminded me that I have a hedge trimmer to return.

i borrowed around 3 books in my whole life. each time, i ended up hating myself for the results. i only lend my books to my girl and i'm never disappointed, she loves reading as much as i do and i'm totally cool with her having a good time w/ my stuff.

floatingslowly 10.04.2007 08:46 AM

I'm the guy you don't want to lend to.

it's not that I'll ruin whatever it is I was lent, but there's a good chance you won't hear from me for months.

tesla69 10.04.2007 09:58 AM

I like to borrow Dvds and books and make a point of returning them quickly, but I don't like to lend out books anymore because they don't seem to come home, or they get stained and I tend to buy 1st editions in small printings (Dennis McMillan Publications for example) that will have some value.

I feel kind of bad about being an asshole in college (circa 85) this girl loaned me a demo tape of this local band 5 balls of Power (members went on to LES STitches, Radicts and Scissorfight among others) and for some reason I decided I needed the original and wouldn't give it back to her and tried to trick her by duplicating the demo but she didn't fall for it - she was a nice girl but smelled funny, she kept a gerbil in her dormroom. Of course the demo is long lost now.

I lend people music and movies pretty regularly, if I find that someone is looking for something and I happen to have it. I never just offer out of the blue, I think that's a bit weird. This one girl has about 50 albums of mine, she came over to my house and picked them out. I don't mind because I'm over most of them, either that or didn't like them in the first place. So if it turns into keeping I won't be too offended. I just got Barry Lyndon back from my art teacher. Most people tend to give things back, esp. if you tell them that it's your favorite movie or record or whatever, even if it's really not.

I usually don't borrow things from other people. Some people try to force things on me, like "hey listen to this band / watch this movie" and I really don't want to do that, because they usually just seem to want someone's approval, anyone's approval really. I don't want to be the person who hates it and has to figure out a way not to lie but not to tell the exact truth either. Usually "it was okay" will suffice.

Green_mind 10.04.2007 05:08 PM

I have no troubles with lending & borrowing, more concerned about the amount of things I've been losing around my house recently, driving me insane.
I like it when friends suggest or recommend a movie or an album, if I didn't, why I probably wouldn't have come across sonic youth.
