also i wasn't really trying to make a literal comparison btw, more so using NCTL as a benchmark of what a 20 year old band should be doing vs the plethora of bullshit nostalgia albums that so many bands have put out in past years

For me that benchmark is Portishead's Third. I don't think a band has ever bounced back and sounded so fucking awesome and different, while maintaining the same fundamental identity. It's the best "comeback" album — for lack of a better word — that I've ever heard. Thought it would suck before it came out, but now I prefer it to Dummy AND self-titled... by, like, a lot.
