First off, let me start by writing that intelligence, in the ultimate sense, is relative. Also, let me acknowledge that this topic could never aspire to notate anything definitive; instead, it's a rather transparently whimsical query. At any rate, I won't be answering the question by naming a band, but rather an individual musical artist.
Laurie Anderson is not only the most intelligent musical performer of our times, but she also, in very general terms, has the smartest fans. I have known a few in my lifetime, and I have read the writings of many others through a yahoo group for years. She has her own forum now, but it is still in its early stages; so far, the forum layout at her website doesn't invite commentary on anything else than her music, art and writing.
Another exceedingly intelligent performer that is a lot more famous (and thus they have a larger cross-section of a fan base with varying levels of intelligence), is David Bowie; anyone familiar with his work and who has heard him speak in interviews know this to be the case. And Bowie is, of course, a close personal friend of Laurie Anderson and has been for many years, even before Lou Reed became the significant other in her personal life in the early nineties. Reed says himself that Anderson is the smartest person he's ever met and that she is one of the few people he's ever known that know anything about art. This is a tangent he discussed when asked about Warhol by Charlie Rose.
In addition to Laurie's many accomplishments that are too numerous to name, no other musician has been asked to be an artist-in-residence for NASA and no other western musician is invited to the World Expo (for technology and the advancement of culture) which only occurs once every five years.
